Fish River Canyon. A pretty pretty big hole!

From the Orange river we turn back north and in the afternoon arrive at Ai-Ais at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon.  We eat lunch at the restaurant and decide to stay one night, even if it is just to have a variation on the nightly suppers of pasta and sauce.

Things are pretty quiet and pretty hot!  Being one of only three visitors at the camping site, we could pick and choose and went for the shady spot under the third largest tree!  (Needless to say, the shaded spots under the 2 larger trees were already occupied!)  we walk around a bit, but the heat chases  us to the indoor swimming pool where we spend a relaxed afternoon reading.

The next morning we wake up with the sounds of baboons turning over all rubbish bins and then go on to jump up and down on the neighbour's truck!   We take a walk up the sandy bed of the canyon, us and a few really big curious baboons!  After cooling off in the heated(!!) outdoors swimming pool, we continue to Hobas further north along the canyon.

Camping spot at Hobas

At Hobas things are also hot and rather quiet.  After tuna mayo sandwiches on the shaded stoep of the kiosk, we drive to the main view point and then Hiker's View where the 5-day canyon hike starts.  Every where the view is just amazing!

We then drive in the opposite direction along the rim of the canyon to Sulpher's View, Eagles Nest and The Rim.

Early on Wednesday morning we drive back to the Main Viewpoint. A cool breeze makes it bearable to take a walk and take more pictures.

Then it is time to go and we continue our journey north to Keetmanshoop, totally convinced that traveling this far south was worth every second!
