From Brandberg we drive west on our way to the coast. The tourist office in Uis has known better days and is deserted. Closer to Henties Bay the world turns into a moon landscape while the heat paints mirrors on the road in the distance.
We checked in at Bucks Camping which is quite
comfortable but not interesting enough to take photos.
Clearly a camping site for fishermen in high season. After a walk on
the beach we enjoy beers and Marula on ice at De Duinen and later share
a fish platter at Go Fishy.
My Henties Bay highlight is buying freshly baked pancakes on the stoep of the Spar the next morning. Seeing a few local women each handling 2 or more pans on a selection of primusses brought back beautiful childhood memories! Especially since it's all about collecting funds for the Henties Bay jukskei club!
The next morning we drive north along the Skeleton Coast on the salt road to Cape Cross and the Seal colony. We watch baby seals being born and hear them bleat like little lambs! But there's also the seagulls waiting their turn to feast on the stillborn.
Furry! But not so that I got the urge to cuddle!!
Afterwards we drive inland searching for Welwitschias and lichen.
Shredded leaves of the Welwitschia which can live for over a 1000 years. |
Pouring drops of water on lichen to see the colours come out. |
Salt crystals for sale. |
